02 · Profile setup (20 minutes, once)¶
On Medium, people who liked an article click your name. The profile has one job: show you're a real maker who writes useful things, and give one clear next step.
Checklist¶
| Item | Do | Avoid |
|---|---|---|
| Name | Your real name, or "Name · Product" if you write as the maker | A brand name alone (reads like a company account) |
| Photo | Your face or a clean avatar, same as on X and GitHub | The app icon |
| Short bio | Who you are + what you write about + who it helps. E.g. "Indie Mac developer. I write about fixing small macOS annoyances." | "Founder of X 🚀 Check out my app!" |
| About page | 3–5 lines: what you build, why, and one link to your site with UTM | A full sales page |
| Links | Your site with ?utm_source=medium&utm_medium=profile |
Several product links |
| Newsletter / email | Turn on email for new stories so followers get them (email reads also earn more, see facts) | — |
| Pinned / featured story | Your best tutorial, not your launch post | A product announcement |
Field limits change; if a field is short, cut words, don't cut the "who it helps" part.
Publications you'll write for¶
List 3–5 publications in your topic before you write (06) and keep them in the publication tracker. Their readers become your followers.
The link that sells¶
Medium's job is trust; your site does the selling. Every link points to one page that matches the article: a feature
page, a free tool, a template, or a free trial. Use the same UTM pattern everywhere:
utm_source=medium&utm_medium=article|profile&utm_campaign=<article-slug>.
